On the right bank of the Ili River to the north-east of Almaty, there is an unusual dune, called “Singing” – this is another unique miracle of nature. While walking, the sand from under your feet begins to slide down the steep slope, and from the depths of the dune there is a hum, reminiscent of the noise of a flying plane. The sandy mountains are more than 120 m high and stretch for 4 km. No one knows exactly where this huge mountain of sand came from in the wind-swept steppe valley between the ridges of the Ulken-Kalkan Mountains. It is curious that the dune does not roam the plain, but remains in place for several millennia. The pronounced crest of the dune with several prominent peaks allows lovers of skiing to make an exotic descent along the slopes of the mountains. The climate in this area is sharply continental. In summer, the temperature often rises above 40 degrees.
